Biweekly News Roundup 2022-10-09

Personal / Website News

Three weeks in a row of articles at my website. I hope I can keep up the momentum.

Two New Book Reviews

I’ve published not one but two book reviews at my website in the past two weeks.

First up, stepping in the realm of middle grade, I’ve done a review on Lora Senf’s debut novel, The Clackity. It can be read right here.

Book Template

Monster mayhem continues in my second book review which is on Robert P. Ottone’s newest novel, Nocturnal Creatures. This one can be read right here.

New Episodes of H. P. Lovecast

More double trouble, two episodes of the H. P. Lovecast Podcast have also been published in the last two weeks.

First is our monthly Transmissions program. For September we interviewed Brenda S. Tolian and Ian Welke. That episode can be listened to at our Buzzspout page, the embedded link below, or via your podcast app of preference.

HPLCP Transmissions – Ep 15 – Brenda S. Tolian and Ian Welke H. P. Lovecast Podcast

Next, roughly a year after we discussed Mimic on our podcast, we return to the franchise by discussing Mimic 2.

This episode can be streamed at the HP Lovecast Buzzsprout page, via the embedded link below, or via your podcast app of preference.

Horror Book Sale at McFarland

McFarland is doing a sale on horror books during the month of October. During checkout, use the code “HORROR22” to get 25% of books in their horror category.

There’s three books included in the sale I have involvement in (The Twilight Zone book is tagged as horror, but it isn’t out yet, so I’m not sure if the sale applies to it or not):

This is a great opportunity to pluck these books up and be supportive to what Michele and I do.

Miscellaneous Tidbits

Footage Fiends Zine

Evan Jordan of the Void Video Podcast and Madeleine of the Unnamed Footage Festival are launching a brand new zine called Footage Fiends that is devoted to all aspects of the found footage genre of films. Tweet embedded below:

I’ve completed and submitted a short-form essay about Mario Bava’s film Caltiki: The Immortal Monster. The submission window for issue 01 is still open, so send them a pitch! Email address is footagefiends at gmail dot com.

Artist Gilead Kickstarter Campaign

Sword and sorcery artist Gilead has started a Kickstarter campaign for his Sketch book and print art.

Check out the campaign on Kickstarter and consider supporting.

Gold Ninja Video’s Fury of Achilles Write Up

I recently interviewed Justin Decloux about his release of Fury of Achilles via his Gold Ninja Video imprint.

Copy 77 of 500!

I’ve compiled his responses with my impressions into a nice write up of the Blu-ray. It can be read here. I strongly encourage purchasing a copy of the Blu-ray, it’s limited to 500 numbered copies.

H. P. Lovecast Podcast

New episode of the H. P. Lovecast Podcast is now online! In this episode Michele and I talk about “Every Hole in the Earth We Will Claim As Our Own” by Gemma Files and “Eye of the Beholder” by Nancy Kilpatrick both from the Dark Regions Press published, Lynne Jamneck edited anthology, Dreams from the Witch House: Female Voices of Lovecraftian Horror.

McFarland Horror Book Sale

McFarland Publishing is doing a promotion during October for their horror books: if you use the code SPOOKY25 during check out, you’ll get a 25% discount.

There are three books I am involved with that are part of this promotion:

This is a great opportunity to pluck these books up!

Ann Radcliffe Academic Conference CFP

The CFP for the 2022 AnnRadCon is now LIVE! Open until the end of December, AnnRadCon 2022 will be hybrid, both online and in person. The CFP can be found at the AnnRadCon page at the StokerCon website. Please share far and wide!

Michele at HWA Halloween Haunts

Michele has an article up at the Horror Writer Association’s website for their Halloween Haunts series going through the month of October.

Michele’s article is a “how to” feature called “How To Make a Spooky Zig Zaggy Mini Halloween Journal.” There is a contest open as well: if you leave a comment (you don’t need to be an HWA member) you have a chance to win the journals Michele made.

General Neo-Peplum News

History of the World Part 2

Looks like a sequel to Mel Brooks’ History of the World: Part I is in the works! Per this article at Variety, it sounds like it will be a series on Hulu with Brooks writing and producing.

For those curious, Tatiana Prorokova writes extensively about History of the World: Part I in her essay “Laughing at the Body: The Imitation of Masculinity in Peplum Parody Films” that appears in The New Peplum.

Women in Classical Video Games Cover Reveal

Bloomsbury will be releasing a new book called Women in Classical Video Games edited by Jane Draycott and Kate Cook. Here is the cover reveal:

Salomé Footage Found

Per an article at Benzinga, 2 minutes of footage of the 1918 lost, porto-peplum film Salomé has been found.

Theda Bara in Salomé.

Podcast News – H. P. Lovecast

New episode of the H. P. Lovecast Podcast is online! We are doing tiki month for the month of May. For our primary episode we did a deep dive on the short story “Blood of the Kapu Tiki” by Eric C. Higgs. The episode is on Buzzsprout and all major podcast platforms.

StokerCon Panel on Podcasting

StokerCon is about two weeks away! Michele and my main priority will, of course, be the Ann Radcliffe Academic Conference, however we’ve both been invited to be on a panel about podcasts! We don’t have a date/time yet (or many it will be an on demand panel?), but here are the details:

Horror Pods and Vlogs Go Viral: The Pandemic and Beyond

Moderator: Lee Murray
Panelists:
Behind the Keyboard: R.F. Blackstone
Galactic Terrors: James Chambers and Carol Gyzander
H. P. Lovecast Podcast: Nicholas Diak and Michele Brittany
HWA Skeleton Hour: Kathryn E. McGee

If you’re interested in attending StokerCon (online this year!) and to see all the great programming, and to check out the AnnRadCon or the panel I am on, more info on how to register can be found at the StokerCon2021 website.

McFarland Sci-fi Book Sale

McFarland is currently doing a sale on their books classified as sci-fi. Up until May 17th, if you use the code SFF25 during check out, you’ll get a 25% discount. Included in this sale is Kevin Wetmore’s Stranger Things book and Michele’s Horror in Space book, both contain essays I’ve penned.

“Cullzathro Fhtagn!” Paper Published

My paper, “Cullzathro Fhtagn! Magnifying the Carnivalesque in Lovecraft through the Comic Book Series Vinegar Teeth” has been published at Academia.edu’s experimental Academia Letters publishing endeavor. I’ll eventually turn my adventure of publishing this essay via Academia Letters into write up as the whole process definitely needs more illumination. However, it’s nice to have a new publication out in the world. Let’s just see how successful it becomes.
