Three Stooges Zine

The first issue of The Journal of Stoogeological Studies: An Unauthorized Three Stooges Fanzine is slated to be published in mid-November. I have an essay in this debut zine on the Three Stooges short, Matri-Phony (1942). For more information contact Will Sloan (website) or keep an eye out on his social media.

Fan2Fan Podcast Appearance

The cool kids at Fan2Fan Podcast have published an episode on the 1985 Lovecraftian cult, splatstick classic, Re-Animator. I am honored they have asked me to be a guest on this episode!

For fun, here is my Re-Animator DVD (the old school version from Elite Entertainment) autographed by Charles Band (who owned Empire who produced the film).

Band autographed this at his Full Moon Roadshow he did in Seattle in the late 2000s. I am not sure why I don’t have Stuart Gordon’s signature on this, I met him at a Monsterpalooza in Burbank and he signed my other movies. I can only think that I couldn’t locate this DVD in time or it was packed away.

And finally, here is my copy of Bride of Re-Animator, also signed by Band.

Alas, I do not own a copy of Beyond Re-animator.

March went by fairly quiet and BOOM!, first week of April do I have some epic and awesome news to share.

Weird Tales Issue #367

The big, big, big news is issue 367 of Weird Tales that is slated to be published this May. Yours truly got to contribute an essay to this legendary periodical!

Look at that! My name on the cover with some other titans of horror with a cover by Mike Mignola. Talk about a milestone, I am extremely elated.

My essay is about cosmic horror back in the 1920s and 1930s issues of Weird Tales. The issue is available for pre-order, so check it out at the Weird Tales website.

If you’re interested in some other aspects of Weird Tales, check out my article where I did some mini-interviews with some of the contributors to the sword and sorcery issue, and also my review of the relaunch issue I did for Fanbase Press back in 2019.

I’ll also be conducting mini-interviews for this issue as well.

New Episode of H.P. Lovecast

We have a new episode of H. P. Lovecast Podcast online!

As conveyed in previous posts, March was a pretty hectic month for Michele and I. We still are settling into the house and we had essays due at the end of the month (for the cats in cinema book) and just a few other obligations that popped up. Because of this, we didn’t get a normal episode of the podcast online, but we did get a Transmissions episode online. In this episode we got to interview weird fiction author Michael Cisco about his new novel, Pest, and one of our academic colleagues, J. Sean Woodard Interview

Friend and colleague Sean Woodard has just had his first physical publication, his essay “‘But Illusions Don’t Kill’: An Examination of Giallo Tropes and Gender in Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue” in the newly released academic collection Bloodstained Narratives: The Giallo Film in Italy and Abroad.

The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana has an interview with Woodard in which he talked about his essay. I’m flattered that he mentions me!

A Hero Will Endure Published!

A Hero Will Endure: Essays at the Twentieth Anniversary of Gladiator is officially out! The collection is available for purchase at the Vernon Press website.

This collection contains my essay “Dance or Dēcēdere: Gladiator and Industrial Music Sampling”. When my hardcover copy arrives I’ll be sure to share it.

There are a few essays in the collection that cite content of The New Peplum. As soon as I can verify what and were I will add the citations to the The New Peplum page.

Rest in Peplum Stella Stevens

Ok, Stella Stevens wasn’t in any peplum movies, but she was in an episode of Wonder Woman, and Wonder Woman is a total peplum character and also The Poseidon Adventure (1972) being named after the Olympian, so I am calling it valid.

1960s kitten bombshell Stella Stevens passed away from Alzheimer’s at the age of 84 on the 17th (CNN Link). Stevens is probably best known for being in The Nutty Professor (1963). and the original The Poseidon Adventure. My first exposure to Stevens was in her Bond Girl-esque role opposite Dean Martin in The Silencers (1966).

I had the honor to meet Stevens at a convention back in 2010. She was a total doll and so swoonerific. She autographed my copies of The Silencers, Hard Drive (1994) (a straight to Cinemax erotic thriller) and a cute pinup photo of her. Unfortunately, I am unable to locate the items as of yet during my unpacking, but once I do I’ll post them here.

She will be greatly missed!

Fist of Jesus Blu-ray

A recent acquisition, I got my paws on a Blu-ray of Fist of Jesus:

Only 15 minutes long, I gave it a quick watch. It was funny: Dead Alive with Jesus. I’ll be doing a proper write up later (maybe for Easter?). The movie can be ordered at the Fist of Jesus website.

Queen Esther (1948) Reviewed

Matt Page has a review of the newly resorted 1948 Biblical peplum film Queen Esther starring Ottilie Kruger (in her only non-stage acting role per IMDB) as the titular character (from the Book of Esther).

Double Pulver/Mamatas Lovecraft

This past Friday the 13th turned out to be a lucky day for me because I received not one, but two! Joseph S. Pulver. Sr. edited Lovecraftian anthologies that contain Nick Mamatas autographs.

The first is The Leaves of a Necronomicon which Nick Mamatas graciously autographed to me. Copies can be ordered via this link at Books Inc.

Next is the Dreamlands anthology New Maps of Dream. This anthology was actually released back in 2020, but the edition with autograph pages from the contributors was delayed due to the sheets being lost in the mail. However, this edition is now released and can be purchased at PS Publishing.

Emmanuelle à la Crepax

Italian erotic comics artist Guido Crepax has been having his body of work republished by Fantagraphics. At the tale end of 2022 the publisher released The Complete Guido Crepax: Erotic Stories 1 which contains all of his Emmanuelle adaptations:

I had trade paperback editions of Emmanuelle 1 and 3 but missing 2, so having this collection released was an excellent surprise.

Of course, if anyone wants to write about sequential art versions of Emmanuelle, I happen to have a CFP open…..

Funko Toga and Sandal Homer

Michele gifted me this rather adorable Toga and Sandal-themed Funko Homer Simpson named Obeseus.

It’s not shown in this picture, but he’s holding a drumstick. I love it!

Xiphos – The Rise and Fall of Athens

The Rise and Fall of Athens is the debut album of the martial/neo-classical outfit Xiphos.

As can be seen from the cover and title, the neo-peplum album is about Ancient Greece. Two of the members of Xiphos, Miklós Hoffer and Troy Southgate, and also a part of the neo-classical outfit H.E.R.R. who have an album called XII Caesars that explores the same subject matter.

Opening Pandora’s Box: Isidora #2 Unboxing

It’s no secret that I am a fan of G. A. Lungaro’s Isidora comic series (as my prior interviews with him on my website as well as on the H. P. Lovecast Podcast can attest). The series combines the neo-peplum genre with the Lovecraft Mythos with a badass female protagonist – so it checks off many of the boxes of media I am interested in.

Earlier this year Lungaro ran a Kickstarter campaign to fund production of issue two of Isidora and it was a great success. In October, backer rewards began to ship to pledgers and over the weekend I received my copy. What follows is a picture story of unboxing my pledge because it turned out to be some amazing stuff contained in the box. A confession: when I donate to a Kickstarter, I do not pay attention to the stretch goals as I like to be surprised with what I received. And I was certainly surprised with my loot!

To begin with, my backer award came in a handsome cardboard box, sporting some nice artwork (taken from the Jay Espin variant cover) that depictions a R’lyehthian-style city with a hint of Giger.

Upon opening the box I was greeted with a divider/cover with an envelope embedded in. 

The envelope contains a thank you card, packaged and presented in the same fashion as the Kickstarter for issue one (see below).

Under the cover that contained the thank you note was three art prints. From left to right they are by:

  • Samantha Branch – This is a print of one of the variant covers of issue one and I love the antiquity elements to it.
  • George P. Gatsis – This is my favourite of the three. I love the colours used in this one and the depiction of Isidora. She looks both pinupy and badass.
  • Deti – This is the artwork used on the edition that combines issue 1 and 2. This one has a very alluring Isidora with overt Lovecraftian imagery.

Under the art print was some stickers and trading cards. Because I love to keep things in mint condition, I did not open the booster pack of cards. Those will forever remain a mystery.

The envelope contained a cute little charm.

The last item in the box was the comic! In this case, I went for the special edition that combines Isidora one and two into one collected edition with a metallic cover! The presentation on this edition is extravagant.

And here is everything from both Kickstarters together. What can I say, everything here is above and beyond and of high quality. As an extra bonus, everything fits perfectly into the Isidora #2 box!

“Cullzathro Fhtagn!” Paper Published

My paper, “Cullzathro Fhtagn! Magnifying the Carnivalesque in Lovecraft through the Comic Book Series Vinegar Teeth” has been published at Academia.edu’s experimental Academia Letters publishing endeavor. I’ll eventually turn my adventure of publishing this essay via Academia Letters into write up as the whole process definitely needs more illumination. However, it’s nice to have a new publication out in the world. Let’s just see how successful it becomes.
