New Episode of H. P. Lovecast

Our monthly Transmissions program went up last Tuesday.

This episode concluded our May Music Month. We interviewed Thomas Blakeley and Matt Toronto of the musical A Dream at the End of Time, and Dorian Williamson and Jim Field of the dark ambient band Northumbria.

The New Peplum Citation

Kevin Wetmore’s essay, “In the Green Zone with the Ninth Legion: The Post-Iraq Roman Film” has been cited in Óscar Lapeña Marchena’s essay “Defendiendo el limes desde Britannia hasta Irak: nuevos enfoques bélicos en el cine de romanos del siglo XXI” in the book Pantallas en guerra.

Unofficial Emmanuelle / Black Emanuelle CFP

Sometime in the latter half of 2022 (after I am finished with AnnRadCon 2022) I plan on publishing an official CFP calling for essays on Emmanuelle and its sequels and spinoffs, Black Emanuelle and its sequels, and all other Emmanuelle knockoffs. I already have an interested publisher, but I want to present to them a fully laid out TOC for an ambitious collection as this.

Though my CFP will not go live until later 2022, if you have any interest in being a part of this collection, let me know! Send me an email or social media message (see my about me page for contact info) to let me know your interest. If you have an abstract already, even better.

Recent Acquisitions

During a trip to Bookman’s last week I happened upon this EC Comics collection:

I already have the EC Comics collection of Valor comics and wasn’t thinking of Two-Fisted Tales since it seemed centered on war narratives. But there were quite a few pre-1900s battles in the comic and there just happened to be a peplum one:

It’s called “Pigs of the Roman Empire” and I am glad I happened upon it. I’ll now have to keep an eye out for other EC collections that just might have more sword and sandal stories in them.

Of course, obligatory seamed stockings panel.

On Sunday Michele and I went off to Zia’s Records looking for treasure. The metal section is always a treasure trove of pepla-music. I happened upon Visions of Atlantis’ Pirates album.

Believe I’ve said on a prior news post, to some pirates are pepla to others they are not. I like to toss in news about pirate-pepla when I can. I’d never heard of Visions of Atlantis (Greek mythology name there!) and the cover of their Pirates album seemed to promise pirate metal in the vein of Alestorm. But I was wrong! It’s symphonic power metal and it’s damn good! So good I plucked up the vinyl and the CD.

For dirt cheap I also happened upon this Blu-ray boxset of Ben-Hur. I actually do not have a copy of Ben-Hur in the sword and sandal collection, so that’s been rectified. The boxset is big, but unlike the Troy boxset I did an article on, there isn’t much in here. I think I’ll still do a quick unboxing article later this week. Content is content, ya know.

Bram Stoker Preliminary Ballot Listing

My essay, “Cullzathro Fhtagn! Magnifying the Carnivalesque in Lovecraft Through the Comic Book Series Vinegar Teeth,” has made the preliminary Bram Stoker Award ballot in the short non-fiction category. Note: this does not denote I am nominated or a finalist. It simply means I am on the preliminary ballot and have a 50% chance to advance to the final ballot.

Active and Lifetime members of the Horror Writers Association who would like to read my essay for final ballot consideration find it online at Academia.edu. Note: if there is a big ad in the way taking up the screen, just hit the X at the top right. Academia.edu is silly that way.

Things in the Well Closing Shop

Small press publisher Things in the Well looks to be closing shop in a few weeks. This means two of their anthologies that I have short stories published in will be going OOP:

Recent Acquisitons

Been a while since I plucked up some pepla films. I went on Amazon and procured these two items:

I’d never seen Ulysses before, but Justin Decloux mentioned it as an essential sword and sandal film in one of the supplements in his release of Fury of Achilles (read my write up) and it’s been on the wish list to get for a while, so time to scoop it up.

I was also in the mood for some 80s sword and sorcery. The new Blu-ray releases of the Deathstalker films from Shout Factory are already out of print! So this four pack will do instead, and that’s fine. But seriously, some Shout Factory Blu-Rays just go OOP right away. I recall last year trying to find their versions of Slumber Party Massacre 2 and 3 and what the hell?

While exploring the Transcending Obscurity Records Bandcamp site I happened upon the neo-peplum metal album Dust of Aeons by Towards Atlantis Nights.

I ordered this album back in November I believe and it came all the way from India, arriving last week. I’ll be giving it a listen this upcoming week. Cool cover!

Eaters of the Dead

Kevin Wetmore’s newest book, Eaters of the Dead: Myths and Realities of Cannibal Monsters, has just been published by Reaktion Books.

We interviewed Dr. Wetmore about this book on episode 6 of our H. P. Lovecast: Transmissions podcast, which can be streamed at Buzzsprout. Michele and I are honored that we are both mentioned in the acknowledgments of the book – thank you so very much Dr. Wetmore!

Nidhoeggr Arise Review

Hal C. F. Astell has reviewed the new Nidhoegger album, Arise, at his Apocalypse Later website.

Nidhoegger sounds like a mixture of folk metal and Viking metal. Since I’ve just got done doing my Vikings presentation at MAPACA, I am kinda in a Viking metal mood, so I’ll definitely be checking this out.

Fascist Receptions of Antiquity in Metal Music

Dr. Swist gave a talk at Harvard back in October called “Fascist Receptions of Antiquity in Metal Music.”

The Bible on Film 40th Anniversary Retrospective

Matt Page will be doing a retrospective on Richard H. Campbell and Michael R. Pitts book, The Bible on Film: A Checklist 1897-1980 at his Bible Films Blog. He’s planning a series of posts to celebrate the book, including an interview with one of the authors, so keep checking his website.

Recent Acquisitions

While at Barnes & Noble today I plucked up two items of interest.

The first is a National Geographic issue devoted to gladiators, which should be an interested research piece.

The next is a hardback edition of Lore Olympus. I became aware of the webcomic way back in 2019 when I was covering the Eisners for Fanbase Press (my overview of the webcomic Eisner nominees can be read here) and I fell in love with the neo-peplum aspects and the art style. However, I only read it back in 2019 but lost track. Now with this hardback I can submerge myself with the comic.

Of note, my article for issue 14 is in the can! It will be an interview with pinup model Miss Corsair Debonair. The interview is done and sent in, just waiting on photos to go with the article. That issue will be released in early 2022.

Aegean RPG

Stoo Goff has a Kickstarter going for an interesting neo-peplum table top RPG called Aegean RPG.

The Kickstarter description is as follows:

Aegean is a tabletop role-playing game about a group of mythic heroes building a new, free city on the shores of the Aegean Sea. There are neighbouring cities to trade or war with, monsters to kill, gods to appease, deceptions, negotiations and bloody skirmishes.

The world of Aegean is an ancient Greece that never existed – a mix of mythology and classical history. The gods visit the earth and converse with mortals, granting gifts of magic and life to some and fear and terror to others. Fearsome monsters roam the lands and seas making every journey an adventure. Strange creatures, some mortal, others half-divine, can be found in the wilderness. These centaurs, nymphs and tritons teach, harass or ignore humans as their whim takes them.

The polis—the city and its surrounding lands—is your home and where your loyalties lie. Your polis is a recently founded colony on the coasts of the Aegean Sea. The leader is called an arkhon, a democratically elected ruler after the Athenian fashion, rather than the hereditary king that many cities still use. The polis sits in a precarious position, between many similar neighbouring states who may wish to trade, ally or make war.

Your character fits somewhere in this world, between the capricious force of the gods, the wilderness and the structure of the polis and its ambitions.

Gladiator 2 Being Written

An article at IndieWire says that Gladiator 2 is current being written and will be ready to hit production after Ridley Scott’s Napoleon movie is made.

Egyptologist Kara Cooney has started a new podcast in September called Afterlives.

It can be streamed on Spotify or your podcast application of preference. Newest episode talks about being an academia, so extremely helpful!

Recent Aquisitions

Figure I would jazz up my news my showcasing any new neo-peplum texts I pluck up. While at a Zia’s Records last week I happened upon two metal releases: Warkings’ Revolution and Ex Deo’s The Thirteen Years of Nero.

I’m enjoying both, especially the adventure metal sound of Warkings. That album is interesting in that in a true neo-peplum fashion, it’s blending genres/histories together: Vikings, Spartans, Templars, etc.

StokerCon 2021

StokerCon will start later this week. Along with Michele, I’ll be co-charing the AnnRadCon academic conference, giving a presentation on the film Encounter with the Unknown, and being a panelist on a panel called “Horror Pods and Vlogs Go Viral: The Pandemic and Beyond.” All of this will be able to be accessed ad hoc during the StokerCon event. More info can be found at the StokerCon 2021 website.

HWA Academic Board Updates

I’ve added some new CFPs to the HWA Academic board. They include CFP for the Aeternum Gothic Journal, a German language CFP for the worlds of Lovecraft, Undead Superheroes, and Cine-Excess.

Call for Abstracts – Ancient World, Modern Music

Dr. Swist has an open CFP called “Ancient World, Modern Music” for the Classical Association of the Middle West & South conference in March 23-26 2022 at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina:

We are seeking abstracts for a panel on the reception of antiquity in modern music. 15-minute papers on the topic may discuss any genre of modern & popular music, including folk & country, rock & metal, hip-hop & pop, and theater & soundtracks, and may focus on lyrics, album artwork, music videos, live performances, or the music itself. We are particularly interested in questions of how musicians integrate ancient culture, myth, and art into modern medium, and how they read antiquity in response to the personal, the aesthetic, and the political.

Send 300-word abstracts & questions to Jeremy Swist (jeremyswist@brandeis.edu) by 10 July 2021. Potential panelists must commit to present in person if accepted.

Classical Imagery in the Album Artwork of White Supremacist Metal Bands

In more Dr. Swist news, a lecture he did earlier this year has been turned into an article at Pharos. The article is called “Classical Imagery in the Album Artwork of White Supremacist Metal Bands” and can be read at the Pharos website.

Eaters of the Dead Book

Dr. Kevin Wetmore has a new book coming out from Reaction Books this September called Eaters of the Dead: Myths and Realities of Cannibal Monsters.

The book focuses on cannibal monsters, but makes mention of mythological entities such as Thyestes, Pelops, Dionysus, and so on. It can be preordered at Reaktion Books and Amazon.

A Knight’s Tale turns Twenty

Variety has a retrospective up on Heath Ledger’s film, A Knight’s Tale, which just turned 20.
